There isn't one compulsory date for writing to Father Christmas, but getting started early enough means the experience can become part of the Christmas build-up rather than another job squeezed into a busy December.

When Is the Best Time to Send a Letter to Santa?
A good time to begin is during October.
By then, children are back at school, autumn has arrived and Christmas is beginning to feel close enough to get excited about without being just around the corner.

The letter doesn't need to be completed immediately. Children could begin with ideas about their year, things they're proud of and early Christmas wishes, then return to it later.

What Should a Child Write in Their Letter to Santa?
A letter to Santa can contain much more than a list of presents.
Children could tell Father Christmas:
- Something they have enjoyed this year.
- An achievement they are proud of.
- Something kind they have done.
- What they are most excited about at Christmas.
- A few presents they would really like.
- A question for Santa or the elves.
- A message for Rudolph and the other reindeer.
They can add drawings and decorations too. There is no need for the letter to be perfect — the handwriting and little details are part of what makes it theirs.

Should Children Send a Christmas List or a Proper Letter?
Either is fine, but turning the Christmas list into a proper letter can make the experience feel much more special.
Instead of simply writing down what they want, children get the chance to talk directly to Father Christmas and imagine somebody at the North Pole actually reading their message.
That is also why keeping a photograph or copy can be worthwhile. Years later, those handwritten letters can become wonderful little snapshots of childhood.
Can Santa Write Back?
Of course, sending the letter is only half of the story.
One of the most exciting ways to continue the tradition is for something to arrive back from the North Pole.

Is December Too Late to Write to Santa?

Postal dates and service availability can change as Christmas approaches, so parents should always check the current information for whichever service they are using rather than relying on a date remembered from a previous year.
For the experience itself, earlier is often nicer. It gives children time to enjoy sending their letter before immediately moving on to Christmas Eve.
Make Writing the Letter an Occasion
Rather than squeezing the letter in between other jobs, choose a quiet afternoon or evening and make something of it.
Bring out the coloured pencils, put on some Christmas music when the season gets closer and let children take their time.

There's no single date that works for every family, but October and November are excellent times to send a letter to Santa.
Start earlier if your child is excited. Leave it a little later if that suits your family traditions.
